PBS's American Experience is America's history book of our age.

If they would’ve actually acknowledged the problem in the riot report, America would look a lot different today

Thanks so much, I was a tween amidst these happenings. I had heard of such a study but never read it. At 70, it is now on my list of must-reads.

Thank you, American Experience PBS, for sharing this educational video. I was a 12 year old in 1967 and remember these difficult times.<br>Sadly, some of the attitudes revealed in this video are still with us. 😢

This documentary covered more in an hour re: "the riots of the 60's" than ANY mainstream education up to and including my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Class of 1998. I cannot find the words to describe how badly my heart aches watching the actual footage. LBJ's response to the final report makes my stomach knot so tight I feel physically ill. Every American should be required to watch this. It shows only a whisper of what Americans have endured as other Americans look the other way and shrug and deny. The part about police involvement over black kids at the playground with white kids made me cry. I am a Gen X white female and I thank God we had black, yellow, red, white and polka dot (chicken pox) kids all roller skating together. Xo

I believe the commission truly wanted to see change and heartfeltly searched for the truth.

This is great. Really crazy how much work went into the report but 50+ years later we're still in the same place and our country refuses to talk about race/poverty for all US citizens or how to tackle the issue ... and the government could really help if it wanted to.

I was a middle class kid from suburban NJ. My Father was from a privileged background. He worked in Newark . I spent the Summer of '67 on a cabin cruiser down the shore with my Mother, my older Sister, and younger brother. An idyllic Summer for a 9 year old. My father brought me to his office one Saturday. He made a point of driving through the areas destroyed by the riots. It looked like the pictures I saw in my history books of postwar Germany. I was shocked. My thought was that the riots destroyed the very homes and community of the people that were most in need of the resources that had been destroyed.

To all who were part of the Kerner Commission: THANK YOU. At least you tried to get our country on the right track.
