For anyone interested, head to oldunreal.com and play UT99, UT2003 and UT2004 with community made patches and graphical overhauls. They work great and these games are still ridiculously good!

My handle "Ledshot" came from UT2004 as a kid I thought the flack cannon fired lead shot but stupidly I couldn't spell "lead" in primary school.
Thanks Gran for ignoring the age rating.

So glad that the oldunreal version exists now and makes this game work really well with modern system. UT2004 did run on modern machines but there were little things off, like the aiming didn't feel as smooth as it should've. The oldunreal version fixes that and it's a blast to play these days.
I would also add to your video that a big part of why UT2004 ruled so much was the mapping and modding scene. Epic Games gave you all the tools you needed to create your own maps with the Unreal Editor 3.0 (1.0 was for Unreal 1 and 2.0 was for Unreal Tournament running on Unreal Engine 1), though the documentation was quite dry to be honest. But if you want to try your hand at mapping, this is great place to start and there are now tons of really good and easy to understand tutorials for all those Unreal Editor versions on YouTube. Just messing around with it also offers a great insight into how games used to work back in the day, especially when you compare it to how game engines, like even Unreal Engine 3 and certainly UE4 and 5, do things today. I find Unreal Engine 2 fascinating in the regard that it is clearly still based on the old system of Meshes for level geometry, but already supplements that with what we would call assets today but UE2 calls "Static Meshes", premade level objects that not only speed up the process of adding detailed objects to your map but also help with performance since the engine basically renders those once and then copies the results to where they were placed in the level and then only adjusts the lighting. Which does sorta started the current "problem" with modern games of having alot of copy pasted looking places in them since you now no longer hand craft everything the players sees.
Sorry, I just really find this aspect of gaming so interesting, how 3D engines evolved and how you can see and feel it with the Unreal Tournament games.

This game was also the definition of peak PC gaming for me back in my teenage years in the 2000s. Not only it had a MASSIVE amount of content out of the box but ALSO let you play a near endless quantity of modifications created by other players/fans out there. It was a kind of Golden Age, if you ask me. This sense of "community" was very strong since the beginning of the Unreal series and even when Epic tried to revive it this idea was there, and, see, if UT is still alive today, its basically due to its community, in fact.

I played all these games as a kid even the Xbox version, they are so awesome! UT99 though takes the cake for audio, and even certain graphics like plasma canon, and shock rifle

Big maps/onslaught opened the box of Pandora. For me it defines the start of Arena FPS downfall.
It provided amazing gaming experience. But at the same time it split the community. And the ones who moved away from classic arena modes moved on to other games soon after.
In my oppinion that "sticking to the core" is the main thing that helped Quake 3 Arena to outlive UT franchise.
(though Quake had less weapons, less maps and the later forks like Quake Live are just a copy of original Q3A, while UT did evolve)

This amazing era will probably never come back ever again.
I had many hopes for Splitgate Arena Reloaded. I love it. Put like 400 hours in after the relaunch. But let's be honest, the player pool will probably dry out in a couple of months more.
We truly live in the dark ages of FPS.
(And I don't mean the Doom Dark Age. I mean the real one.)

Nice retrospective video 😁All UTs are good in their own way for what they was. For me, the best is UT4, the game mechanics are far superior than any previous UT. And since I make my own maps, well, it look awesome, as good as any stock maps. I still play all UT games once in a while but UT4 is my UT-go-to since it came out.

Meeeen that cool green projectile from assault buggy, these space maps, OST like full album, these enemies and call outs'"And stay down!''... This feels sad that I consider playing 26 years old game again instead of the new ones

Overall I prefer UT99 because UT2004's designs feel more goofy but I liked the increased detail in 2004's maps. I liked old Deck better and some UT2004 maps looked too metallic but overall both games are fun.

UT 2004 visuals are a perfect balance between realism and style. UT 3 was way too detailed. Especially with the heavy use of normal mapping. I found it difficult to visually separate the characters from the environment.
