As a single guy working on a computer all the time, I bought a dog and it completely transformed my life. A bit of responsibility, a reason to go out multiple times a day, and someone who loves you every single day no matter what. It changed the universe around me.

14 Brutal Truths I Know at 40 and Wish I Knew at 20

1. You don't need a productivity system, you need a bedtime
2. 8 hours of sleep and a daily walk outside will solve as many of your problems as any online guru or coach will
3. The most effective antidepressant in the world is exercise
4. If you don't choose your priorities in life, the world will choose them for you
5. Your values are exemplified by what you're willing to give up/sacrifice
6. If saying no and standing on your own makes you feel guilty, then at some point in your life you've probably been trained to neglect yourself
7. Most people aren't actually stuck because their life is too hard. They're actually stuck because the distractions feel safer than the solutions do
8. Learning more is a smart persons way to procrastinate
9. Focus on doing 1 or 2 things extremely well. Do them in 1 place very consistently with a small group of people over a long period of time
10. Confidence and fear both require believing in something that hasn't happened yet. You're choosing to be scared
11. Growth requires failure the same way that gaining strength requires pain
12. The only difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is the successful person has tolerated more failures over a longer period of time
13. You don't get rid of anxiety or self-doubt, you just learn how to develop the ability to act despite it
14. Happiness is not a lack of problems. Happiness is having better problems. Success is having better failures. Discipline is, in a way, having better addictions. You don't get rid of the struggle, you learn to upgrade it

I’ve been a labor union leader for over 20 years and I teach young men how to become leaders and to publicly speak and one thing I always say is “nobody cares about you or what you’re saying, they care about how things are effecting them. Remember that when you speak and give solid information and keep it short and if you do it properly the members will remember the message and the call to action and more or less forget about who educated them”

Social media probably was one of the worst inventions for society in the last 30 years. People lost the ability to focus on a massive scale.

I remember being told at 20 “don’t make yourself more ill by forcing yourself in to work when you are sick. No-one will thank you for destroying your health to make them more money. And your colleagues will resent you for spreading your bugs around. You can’t win. If you take time off sick, they resent having to cover your work; if you go in sick, they resent you for spreading the illness. So do what’s best for you and remember… workmates/colleagues are NOT real friend, don’t make the mistake of confiding in them or sharing secrets/gossip.”

At 60 yrs old, can confirm the accuracy of these “brutal truths”. Here’s another one: it’s not only ok, but really likely, for you to just be average, do average things, and simply exist. That is a perfectly good life, and it’s what most of us live. Maybe all of us, really.

People tend to seem extraordinary by word of mouth, usually after they’re dead, or from a distance. It’s not that we aren’t capable of occasionally doing extraordinary things, it’s more that the ordinary of a life can get lost in the retelling of the few extraordinary bits.

That’s what our world of shouting media has successfully enhanced to the point that we’re being dazzled en-masse into thinking extraordinary SHOULD be our ordinary. The human system isn’t designed for that. There’s nothing wrong with humans doing the same thing other animals do; survive, hopefully in safety and good quiet digestion. That is perfectly fine, and in many cases, quite an accomplishment in itself.

When everything in life starts feeling too much at once, it can be hard to understand what’s really causing it. Clara Hartley’s anxiety quiz may help you recognize some of those patterns.
