He was one of the only people in his time who believed in keeping things clean, and while other surgeons would view a bloody apron as a badge of honor to show how many surgeries they&apos;ve done, Liston actually got a new apron for every surgery. He also kept all his tools clean, and washed his hands. He was also one of the only people who viewed the patient&apos;s mental state as important, and he actually put effort into comforting patients. The reason why he operated so fast was to keep the patients pain to the absolute minimum. He actually had a much lower mortality rate then most people, his was about 1 in 10 while most surgeons had a mortality rate of 1 in 4. He&apos;s also credited with a number of crucial inventions that are still used today, the two main ones being the Bulldog forceps which are used to close arteries, and the leg splint. And most importantly, he was the first surgeon to use modern anesthesia in a surgery. Two of his students that were present during the surgery then went on to pioneer chloroform&apos;s use as one of the first anesthetics, as well as aseptic technique. He was, by all accounts, one of the best surgeons of his time.

  So apparently medieval dentists used to think that the blood vessels and nerves under teeth were worms, and after pulling out rotten teeth, would pull them as well as they &quot;were the cause of the pain&quot;. I&apos;m so glad I don&apos;t live in the past.

  I feel so bad for ancient Egyptians. Like... imagine going through a religious burial with a grave full of your personal belongings, only for your corpse to be eaten over a millennium later by Victorians.

  Speaking of painful medical procedures and treating women as less than human, here&apos;s something that still goes on today: Women who get IUDs are almost never given local anesthesia before the procedure. Anyone who&apos;s morbidly curious can Google <b>how</b> IUDs are inserted. All I&apos;ll say here is that many women who get them scream, almost vomit, and even nearly pass out from the pain. And it&apos;s totally unnecessary! Giving a local anesthetic beforehand would be so, so easy. I have no idea why it&apos;s not done.

  As for the corset thing, Tightlacing then was actually seen as creepy as we find extreme body modification today. Most women just wore them in the same context that people wear spanx and bras today.
