The problem with things like this is I look at it and think to myself ‘I could probably do that poorly but well enough’ but I am already knee deep in all of the things like this that came before it that I didn’t have time for when I thought about them: ‘I could probably do that poorly but well enough’.

Fun fact - pointe shoes are still made using the turnshoe method :D! And they're also not made with a left and right, the dancer chooses which one goes on what foot and then breaks them in accordingly

I imagine Medieval dogs enjoyed their masters' shoes as their favorite chew toys.

I came across the short of this video not seeing the creator and not realizing it's Bernadette, then seeing the notification of the video and being like "ahhhhh!!!!"

They use wooden under shoes, in Germany called Trippen. So no wet feet or other inconveniences while walking outdoors. The wood also protects from cold stone floors. Some looked like Japanese Getas. If you search for Trippen and Mittelalter you can find pictures.

Eva says this is very different from how shoes are made today, but... not always. Once you get out of mall-chic sneakers and foam rubber, all of the techniques and technology she's using here are very much alive and well in the shoe and boot industry today. There's a direct and unbroken lineage between the pieces her work is based on and the Nicks I'm wearing, and I think that's really cool.

Not to steal Bernadette's thunder, but if you want to see more making of shoes like this (with more instructional details) Nicole Rudolph and Morgan Donner both have videos of making turn shoes.
