As someone from Eugene & born in the 70s, this is super relatable & relevant. I remember watching One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, & reading the book. My sister lives in Monroe. I’m going to share this video with her. Very interesting

Kesy wrote the book after working in a mental hospital in California that was doing LSD therapy and after "helping himself" to some of the LSD found inspiration for the book

Dean Brooks (1916- 2013) was accused of throwing psychiatry 20 years back... because of agreeing to allow film shooting in the hospital under his care & charge. You judge yourself...

My husband's grandmother who died while in the hospital and my brother, who was a patient in more modern times, both went through hell at this hospital. Parts of letters which were written by my husbands grandmother were crossed out to cover-up wrongs that the hospital was doing. My brother broke his arm while participating in an exercise of using a pillow to take out his anger. This obviously wasn't thought out too well. Another time he was put in a tank of water with a lead cover to hold him down. There were cruel atrocities which occurred here which I can't put into print here. These 2 women are talking about this place with extreme favorism towards their father, who ran it. You are only presenting a very skewed, one side of the story. I'm appalled at the distorted presentation. PICNICS indeed!

Decision about stopping unpaid patient work…. Great motive, unintended consequences. Loss of identity.

Judging by the stuff that has happened in recent times, this place and always has been running terribly and the fact that they kept the old creepy-looking facade makes all the more ironic.

Poisoned scrambled eggs, ward 81, library of dust, understaffed security, dodgy funding, patients being discharged early, patients escaping and finally the Kenneth Hass incident.

0nly a matter of time before something goes horribly wrong.

Patient rights have become the down fall of the patients. They need to learn skills, they need to learn to be accountable. Now the patients treat a facility like they are at the Hilton. No accountability. No pride. No incentives. No rehabilitation. Let them learn skills.... even a simple skill like keeping a room clean or making a bed. Our mentally ill know the ropes and they milk it to the umpteenth degree. We are doing more harm than good for them. A terrible state of affairs. The level of mental illness is through the roof right now. There are no repercussions for bad behavior or harming others. It has become a free-for-all.

Ward 81, is the women's security ward of the Oregon State Mental Institution, the only locked ward for women in the state.

In 1979 Mary Ellen Mark took some incredible photos of the women on Ward 81. The women in the photo book, all who agreed to have their pictures taken, were all unique interesting lovely people, Oregonian women with families, loving husbands at home with the kids waiting for mama to come back home. I know this personally as someone I love and have two beautiful children with was there at the Oregon state hospital twice. Lighthouse Ward..

That place is still a disaster and Oregon still is when comes to mental health.drugs, homelessness, criminalizing the mentally ill aka disabled. I learned about Oregon's reputation from a ER doctor. When i was suffering from my own mental health. I am still suffering but i feel its important to know that Oregon is still lacking when it comes to helping people. One of Oregon's biggest issues is mental health. Since plenty of drug addicts have mental health issues and being homeless probably isn't good for physical or mental health. People with disabilities are more likely to be suicidal than regular people. The focus needs to be decriminalizing people in general and addressing mental health in my opinion. But it seems like you gotta be a drug addict or a criminal to get help in Oregon. This state is still a disaster and it's outrageously expensive to live here. If i wasn't disabled myself i would move to a state that helps people or get the hell out of this country. Human lives, especially disabled lives don't matter to people.
