My girlfriend is a kindergarten teacher and she will attest that over the past years she could clearly see the decline in students' ability to think, act, and test so its definite a real thing that is happening. In my opinion after listening to her anecdotes, even if we as a society immediately implement changes these kids already have such a shaky foundation that these changes won't even be noticeable for a few years. Its one of those things that kids have just been failed by unchecked phones and unlimited access to AI in school. I know that sounds like I am a boomer (I sadly do not own a house so I can't say I am boomer), but I even feel my shortcomings in this area. I used AI consistently when it came out as I was learning foundational things in my career and it is already showing its fruit. I am now having to go back and learn the foundational things because as I've progressed my foundation was shaky that when I got into those more technical conversations I wouldn't be able to keep up and I make critical novice errors. If you apply my situation backwards on these kids and you assume that I have the median ability to think and act, at least half of the younger generations are going to experience this feeling on such a more significant level because they are working on the basic foundation. This doesn't even factor in effectively unlimited time on screens by parents that can't or don't want to spend time with their kids. Nor does this thought process consider social media health effects on teens, brainless content, and endless scrolling, but I think it shows that it really is a real problem. Anything that stops us from engaging our brain is going to affect our ability to think or problem solve, and it's only going to affect those that are working on the foundations everything.

The more I think about it. Its just sad. I think it was highlighted earlier in the podcast: kids just want the candy, they don't know what is good or bad for them. To them too, the unlimited dopamine scroll (either AI slop or not doesn't matter) and AI to solve every potentially hard task in front of them is that candy. I think we should expect for the kids to eat the candy as much as they want. It's not just an AI thing in my opinion (though that does exacerbate the issue); it really is that we as a society don't give kids the foundation they need to succeed. I could keep rambling about this, but man its just sad.

We'll figure out soon though how much Covid actually affected kids. The last generation of Covid kids entering the school system as kindergarteners now if my math is correct.
