Here’s the thing: from 80,000 feet you can see REALLY far. Like really far. Like halfway across China far. As cameras got better, there really wasn’t all that many places in the world that can’t be seen from flying at 80,000 feet along the border of a country. And the stuff that can’t be seen from that distance we’ve got satellites for. <br><br>Plus the big problem with the high speed territory violating planes is just that, they violate other country’s territory. They’re going to know about it and there are going to be political and strategic ramifications for trying a flight like that. The U2 with a fleet of rivet joints and satellites are just better at doing the spy job.

Problem is that we just stopped using aircraft for strategic reconnaissance in favor of satellites. <br> Now we have to start all over again-but with stealth. Now that radar has become less an issue, just have to figure out how to stealth friction generated heat and shockwaves.
