How They Saved a 3,000-Year-Old Temple From Drowning

In the 1960s, a rising lake threatened to swallow one of the greatest monuments of the ancient world forever. The only way to save it was to do the unthinkable: cut it apart. In this video, we follow the incredible engineering story of Abu Simbel, the colossal rock-cut temples of Ramesses II. We start with how ancient workers carved an entire temple straight out of a sandstone cliff, then jump forward to the race against the Aswan High Dam, when engineers from around the world sliced the temples into more than a thousand massive blocks, lifted them out of the mountain, and rebuilt them 65 meters higher on a brand-new artificial cliff. You'll see how the cofferdam held back the Nile, how stonecutters made cuts only a few millimeters wide by hand, how resin and steel bars kept the fragile sandstone from crumbling, and how giant concrete domes created a hidden mountain above the rebuilt temples. We also look at how the famous sun alignment survived the move, shifting by just one day. Some visuals in this video are AI-generated reconstructions created to illustrate historical events and construction methods. 📚 Sources & Further Reading UNESCO World Heritage Centre – Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/88/ UNESCO – The Story of Abu Simbel https://whc.unesco.org/en/story-abu-s...
