It's good to still be able to have adventure and fresh experiences even if one is not young. More power to you!

Most language learners struggle to read without translating each individual word or focusing on each word instead of the meaning of a sentence. When I was teaching English in Japan (which I did for over two decades), my students struggled with the same problems you're having. I encouraged them to not get stuck on understanding every single word, but I also encouraged them to engage in reading non-text materials like children's books. The idea was for them to start the process of learning common phrasing or grammar conventions not as explanations, but as they naturally occur. I wanted them to learn sentences as a native speaker does rather than to see it as some sort of equation or for every word to be understood at all times. When we're children, we don't always know every word as we read at increasingly higher levels and we just muddle through if we can't look the word up.

Good luck!

I've can definitely see and hear improvement in your spoken Japanese when comparing this example to one you shared in a previous video. Considering all of your health challenges, any improvement is a big win! I hope you enjoy a great break, and you are able to keep being positive.

Whenever you feel like you're not progressing as far or as fast as you want or hope, just remember that you're a lot further along the road of language learning road than you were a few months ago. And there was a time when you knew no Japanese.
And if it's helpful, I'm 65 in December, learning Spanish in Spain and i just got a part time job teaching English in a language academy. Good luck on that front!

Hi Penny, I’m 62, I am learning Japanese, I have my N5 test in December. I understood your presentation ❤. I find it quite overwhelming but am trying to just relax and not force myself to remember, it comes eventually when my brain is ready. I love your channel
