  I speak from experience when I say you should plan on spending lots of time and effort <i>assimilating!</i> Learn their language --fluently. Get on their cultural and historical wavelength. And steer clear of the clueless expat scene. Words can&apos;t describe how much better your experience will be if you follow this advice.

  It&apos;s all very well that English is widely spoken. But you can find yourself making good friends with only British and American expats, whose main conversational topic is THE Locals-- and their faults. Speaking the local language-- even badly-- makes a HUGE difference in how graciously you&apos;ll be welcomed. (I say this having lived in France, Greece, and Turkey.)

  Maltese are very proud of their culture and not vey open to others, perhaps they welcome tourists, but very into ceremony and insular.

  What’s NOT addressed here are the taxes charged on the retirees &nbsp;social security. After researching, it seems more than likely that you’re going to taxed in US as well as some of the destinations being discussed here. By the time you consider the tax implications, it could very well be that a foreign destination isn’t going to be financially beneficial all things considered. Yes, while the cost of living may be lower, the taxes may very well cancel the benefits you might otherwise enjoy. Food for thought.

  The whole central Italy is full of beautiful medieval villages where houses are cheap and the quality of life is outstanding!

  The huge thing you missed in this video was the tax implications, a very important thing to consider when you retire where ever you take up residency in any country

  By far the greatest challenges in immigrating to Slovenia are: the extremely difficult southern Slavic Slovene language; the very strict residency laws that make it nearly impossible to stay there. That said, the Slovenian culture is the healthiest, most cohesive, proudest, highly educated, talented citizenry in the world.

  An associate moved to Portugal and the medical care she gets for follow-up on her cancer (which is in remission) she said is way better and about 20 percent the cost of her care in the USA.
