  I could write a book about everything that happened while I worked around CBS Records. There are so many stories that most people would never believe, but one lesson has always stayed with me.<br><br>During the early 1980s I watched Michael Jackson become increasingly interested in the business side of music, not just performing. Around the time he was working with Paul McCartney on “The Girl Is Mine” and later “Say Say Say,” I remember hearing conversations about music publishing and ownership. Paul explained how valuable publishing rights were and talked about wishing he owned more of the songs he had written. Those conversations made a lasting impression on Michael. Michael wasn’t interested in taking something that belonged to someone else. He became fascinated with the idea that artists should understand the value of their work and the importance of owning publishing rights whenever possible. He began learning everything he could about music publishing. Eventually, when the opportunity came to purchase the ATV Music catalog, which included the Beatles’ catalog, Michael decided to buy it. That decision changed the music industry forever and showed artists just how valuable publishing ownership could be. Years later, Prince had his own well-publicized disagreements with Warner Bros. over ownership of his master recordings. His battle was different from Michael’s situation because it involved his recording contract rather than music publishing. Watching both artists fight for greater control over their music taught many people in the industry how important ownership really was. Walter Yetnikoff believed artists deserved to be successful, but he also believed business decisions had consequences. He expected everyone around him to be professional. One of the first things he ever told me was, “You don’t talk unless someone talks to you first. Listen more than you speak.” At the time I thought he was being overly strict, but I later realized he was teaching me how to survive in the music business. Walter always looked out for me. Whenever I contributed ideas or rhythms to a recording session, he made sure everything was documented correctly and that I received proper credit and compensation. He believed that if someone created something valuable, they deserved to be paid fairly for it. That lesson stayed with me throughout my career. Working around artists like Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, and many others showed me both the excitement and the cost of fame. I saw fans waiting outside buildings for hours hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite performers. Security had to be alert because some people ignored the rules in hopes of getting close to celebrities. Watching all of that made me realize I preferred working behind the scenes rather than living in the spotlight. When Sony eventually took over CBS Records, the atmosphere changed. It became a much larger corporate organization, and things were never quite the same. I will always be grateful for what I learned during those years. The friendships, the lessons, and the opportunity to watch history unfold from behind the scenes shaped the rest of my life. Looking back now, I realize that the greatest lesson I learned wasn’t about fame or money. It was about understanding the value of your work, protecting it, and surrounding yourself with people who respect your talent. Michael had to deal with something completely different. Becoming more than a human. More than an icon. He was more than life at one point and he threw it all away because he surrounded himself with the wrong people. As much as people talked about Joseph, you can say what you want but Joseph kept Michael safe the same as my father did with me. Michael never had to leave his family. I get it that they were riding his coat tail and his talent but at the end of the day, Joseph blew it as well. He could have treated Michael with respect and Michael would have never left.

  Michael Jackson’s Victory tour was the best. And he didn’t hate it, he just hated the drama with his dysfunctional family. And wanted it to be solo Thriller tour but was forced to perform with his brothers who were definitely more than ever before background characters.

  This black man despite genius musical abilities was always like the underdog. His father and brothers were like sharks who use family loyalty to try to control him. they could have worked without him but they loved easy money. Only want to tour and record when they felt like it.
