COMMENT: Are you a native of Germany and have been to Dresden - or, if you’re from somewhere else - would you like to visit it?

As a Dutchman, I visited Dresden six months ago. By car I arrived directly into the inner city. I was overwhelmed by al this architectural beauty. Visiting the Frauenkirche, which innerarchitecture resembles a crossover between a church and a theatre, struck both my eyes and mind. The reconstruction of Dresden resembles that of other cities destroyed by war, such as the Flemish town of Ieper. The most beautiful thing about these reconstructions is the sheer will of the people to restore what the love most: their city in all its former glory. It also reflects both the sheer uselessness of war and the pain it causes to people.

Marc Bouwman

Absolutely beautiful, articulate narration. I am a New Yorker and I would LOVE to visit Dresden to witness its miracle of rebirth. Sending love from New York City to Dresden.

A stunning presentation of a heartbreakingly beautify city, once destroyed then arisen from its ashes like the Phoenix.

I live in Berlin and visited Dresden several times. I'm grateful to have witnessed the astonishing rise from the ashes.

As a student in Germany in the early 90s, The one place I wanted to see was Dresden. This was before it’s massive restoration rebuilding started. There were many historic monuments that had been rebuilt. The one I wish I’d been started when I was there was Die Frauenkirche. It was Horrible crime that the city was destroyed late in the war, absolutely unnecessary. The war was almost over, Dresden held no significant war value.

I would love to visit Dresden again. I've only been once, and that was in 1992. The scars of WWII were still very much evident.

We still mourn the lives of 25,000 residents of the city of Dresden and a countless number of refugees, who thought to have refuge from the onslaught of the Red Army and lost their lives in the fire storm following the bombing. Estimates vary greatly, but the number is horrifying - up to 500,000.

First time I’ve been to Dresden was in the late 1990’s and then 2022 once again. It was hard for me to recognize the city I’ve been to earlier…a lot has changed.

I had always wanted to see this. I finally went a few years ago. While some of the restorations are amazing, it’s nothing like the old pictures. They’ve redone certain things. Still beautiful.

I am British , and although I understand perfectly the evil of the Nazi regime , I am ashamed of the damage we inflicted on so many of Germany’s historic town centres .
We could have concentrated more on industrial and military targets …. but at the same time I know that we cannot rewrite history !
