If ANYONE in Hollywood had half a brain, they’d realize every single video Nic has ever done would make for a great movie.

I like the fact that in 1962, they all became honorary Texans.

When I worked at the VA, I was fortunate enough to award a total disability evaluation on a Nisei vet who held the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart

My father’s family was interned my father was in college and years later he met a Nisei man called Sven Nakamura and my father said Sven is kind of an odd name for a Nisei. The man said his family had a farm in Oregon and when the relocation order came down the neighboring farmer came over and said I heard about the order it’s wrong , you are going to have a lot of worries ahead but don’t worry about your farm I’ll take care of it. This was a tremendous undertaking but he took care of the farm and paid the taxes. When Mr Nakamura came home he found his farm in perfect shape, he asked his neighbor Sven how can I repay you to which Sven repliedYou owe me nothing this is what neighbors do so he named his first son after him.

The fact that American soldiers of Japanese descent sarcastically screamed banzai while charging up hill at germans is simultaneously the most metal and hilarious thing i’ve heard about in a long time

As an Asian myself, I can tell you that 'dropping out of med school' is a death sentence in and of itself. Daniel Inouye has massive balls. Respect.

Fun fact
Mr Miyagi's character was a member of the 442nd. I thought that it was nice to recognize the brave men of this amazing unit.

My great grandpa was in the lost battalion. He was from Brigham City, Utah. When he died in 2001 I was 11 years old and at his funeral my dad noticed a Japanese man dressed in his full uniform. No one knew him, so my dad went up to him and asked him how he knew my great grandfather. He was one of the men who rescued him from the top of that hill in France. I am here because of these men. Forever grateful. My great grandpas name was Wynn K. Jensen. Thanks for telling this story. I never understood the history of the unit that rescued them. Seriously thank you. In tears over here watching this.

For what it's worth, Fat Electrician - My family lost all of its business holdings and most of their property in the wake of 9066. Most of them died in Manzanar and/or Heart Mountain (we think - our records are sketchy and mostly waterlogged). And many years later, when some of my relatives tried to watch Star Wars, they came to the same conclusion that you did; Too close to what they went through.

Thanks for covering the Nisei! My grandpa fought in the 442nd, and I appreciate their story being told for a new generation.

For your posterity: My grandfather was fond of recounting two stories. (1) His team found an isolated building into which he and his forward scouts saw many, many German officers frequent, often in great numbers. They'd meet early in the morning, late in the evening, always traveling in groups, furtively whispering to each other and "wildly gesturing." My grandpa's team got a bead on their schedule, regular as it was, and during the wee-hours, they raided the building to try and capture some officers.

Whore house. They'd found a whore house.

And (2) My grandpa told the story of when he had had enough fighting. Evidently, they were attacking some kind of entrenchment, though the incoming fire was inexpert, poorly aimed, and erratic. Through relative ease, they were able to encroach and control the point, and when they advanced upon the nest and threw open the door, my grandpa said, "Botchan [he said to me], I screamed into the nest and heard only crying. I stepped inside and found German children, tears running down their faces. That's when I wanted to throw down my rifle and come home."

My mom's brother(my uncle) was in the 442nd.
Upon America declaring war against Japan, my father(in Hawaii) went to volunteer to join the war but was turned down because he was Japanese-American. He was later drafted. While going thru basic training, he was walking by a few Japanese prisoners(behind the fence) & they noticed he was Japanese & started to talk to him(in Japanese). My father, could understand most of what they were saying(but not all of it). An officer just happened to be watching what was going on & immediately told the Sargent to make my dad an interpreter. He was then sent to the South Pacific during WWII(1535th AAF-if it wasn't for that officer, my father could have been sent to the 442nd). He was even sent to Tokyo, after Japan surrendered to help rebuild Japan. My father's younger brother(another uncle of mine), served in the Korean War & Vietnam War. Even my mom did her part for the War(she was a seamstress) & helped by sewing uniforms, blankets, etc(whatever was needed). All of them are now buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific(in Hawaii).
Mahalo for telling this story, as we cannot forget those who sacrificed so much for this country...especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
