Does the Rök Runestone Describe the End of the World?

"Finally decoded" is the headline. Nothing in the sources behind this video backs it. The Rök runestone is a ninth-century funerary monument, a stone cut and raised for the dead, and its runes have been read and argued over in more than one direction at once. This episode takes the end-of-the-world reading seriously as a live argument and follows it to the exact point where it steps off the carved text and onto inference. We start with the plainest thing the sources say: it is a memorial that carries stories. José Antonio de la Nuez Claramunt argues one of those stories survived as prose in a fourteenth-century Icelandic tale, Sörla þáttr. Then we set two published readings side by side, as Anders Hultgård did in 2022: Ralph reads the inscription as riddles keyed to cosmic symbolism; Williams reads it against the background of the Ragnarök myth. That single line is where the end-of-the-world hook comes from, and it is one reading among several. From there we follow Per Holmberg's work: reading the stone together with the place it stands, a shift in rune size he suggests probably copies the sun's light at sunrise and sunset, large crosses of cipher runes he proposes may stand for the sun and small crosses for stars, and his conclusion that the monument was raised to enact a counsel of the gods to secure the rhythm of celestial light. In 2025 he goes further, reading the riddles as the moon across the year, the sunrise at the autumn equinox and the stars that night, framed as an ongoing cosmological battle. An end of the world finishes; his word is ongoing. Finally, Kate Heslop's question: what does a grave do inside a community's remembering, and why carve this on a memorial at all? Every claim carries a source card on screen at the moment it is spoken. None of these readings arrives as a verdict, and this video does not pick a winner.
