As Ned departs Bran’s chambers and prepares to head back to his solar, he finds Robert waiting for him at the foot of the tower, rubbing his hands together. The king appears rather uncomfortable, but offers his friend a pat on the shoulder. He takes Ned in one arm and guides him away. Robert: So, how is the lad after his fall? Ned: The Maesters are not certain. He is fighting more than they were expecting. Many feared he would die, but now there is a chance he might live. Robert: That’s good, the boy is a fighter. It's a damn shame what happened to him, at such a young age for him. Ned, I want you to know that my family and I are here for you. Whatever you need, just name it, and I will get it for you. Ned: Thank you, Robert. Your generosity is appreciated, but right now we do not need gifts. I think my family simply needs space to process everything that is happening. That only requires time. Robert: Then you shall have it. Tell me, wasn’t that boy supposed to go with us south to the capital? Ned: He was. Bran was meant to accompany me alongside his sisters. He has long admired the knights of the south. I thought it might have been good to see them and to train alongside the likes of Ser Barristan. However, Catelyn wished for him to remain here. It seems she has gotten her wish, unfortunately. Such a trip is now out of the question, even if he wakes up. Robert: Now, now. Never say never, the boy may wake, and when he recovers, I will gladly have him in my court. But you are right that those are conversations for another time. So it shall just be your girls who join us? Ned: Yes, Robert. But there is still the matter of Jon, whom I must deal with. Catelyn does not want him in Winterfell, not when I am serving you. Robert: Aye, women aren’t keen on having children not their own, making a mess of things in their homes. Believe me, I’ve been there with Cersei. I’m surprised she even let you keep him there for this long. So what’s gonna happen? Ned: I am not sure, that is what I am trying to figure out. She wishes for him to be sent off, and the boy is talking about joining the Night’s Watch. Robert: The Night’s Watch? That is a grim place for someone as young as him. Does he truly understand what he’s getting into, getting involved with a place like that? Ned: I am not sure. Perhaps he has been listening to too many stories from Benjen. Yet even my brother wasn’t keen on having him there, not when he hadn’t experienced the joys of life first. Yet Catelyn is insistent on his leaving. My only other option is to have him fostered by some other house. I certainly won’t have him sent off on the road. Robert: Hmmm, well. If she doesn’t care about where he ends up, might I suggest the Vale? As it happens, I have a bastard in the Vale too. Ned: Yes, I remember. Little Mya. Robert: Aye. She’s currently serving Lady Waynwood, I believe. Ned: It was Lord Nestor. Jon Arryn arranged for her to serve Nestor Royce while he ran the Vale in his absence. Robert: Yes, right. Well, he’s been searching for matches for her for some time now, and perhaps Jon might be a good pairing. Ned: You wish to wed my son to your daughter? Robert: Why not? I’m already having one of my sons wed your daughter. Besides, maybe it is good for them. To tell you the truth, I hadn’t visited Mya as often as I should. Gods, I don’t even remember the last time I saw her. It is long overdue for me to do something. If nothing else, I can at least ensure she has a companion with her. Ned: Robert, I’m honored by your consideration that you would think Jon worthy. Robert: Think nothing of it. And it need not be a marriage right away. We can at least just have them spend time and see if they get along. Ned agrees, and the arrangements are soon made. A raven is sent to Nestor Royce, informing him that Jon will become his new ward.
