This feels less like “quit your job” content and more like a reminder of how fragile modern specialization really is

I tried learning one old craft seriously for a while. Respect for the skill went way up, romantic ideas about replacing a job went way down

Funny how so many medieval skills are still more practical than a modern 9-5 job.

My wound care nurse is using honey on me.<br>Leeches are not just used for their anti-coagulant properties; they're useful when there's dangerous bruising. Put a couple of leeches there, let them feed until they come off. The bruise is gone.<br>Medical-use maggots are (usually) a species that will only eat dead flesh, never live. Any time the doctor wants to preserve every bit of living tissue while removing the dead stuff, the most effective way is to put these maggots on the wound. The other option is to cut the dead flesh out, but that will inevitably take some living tissue with it. The maggots are better at preserving live tissue than humans are.<br>That said, I'd approve the doctor using the maggots, I'd just ask them to put some sort of screen or cover over the area. I really don't want to see it. Honey's fine. Leeches are a bit squicky but it makes sense. Maggots - it's the right treatment but I reserve the right to not see it.

You can't put whisky or brandy into any other receptacle BUT wood - it won't age otherwise. Those hoops? They're heated red hot before being put on. As they cool they contract and pull those staves together TIGHT!

There are a few old skills that I can do. I can spin natural fibers into yarn, weave cloth, and make soap and walnut ink from scratch.

I've heard about coopers a couple of times now. Once on one of PBS's woodworking shows. Pretty complex, a lot of millimeter style of measurements. Often done with a bit of string. If that don't set you back on your heels, I don't know what will. The other thing that amazed me was that the barrels were typically made with oak and the expected useful lifespan might be 50 years. So, no beech or pine. And there was a line to get that oak.

Fascinating stuff. The old ways were based on observation of WHAT actually works, and now we understand WHY it works ... even though we don't always manage to come up with a decent alternative. Also there is much satisfaction to be gained from almost any hand craft. Let that not blind us to the marvels that modern engineering and medicine have accomplished though, but rather let us benefit from and appreciate both.

Was surprised plastering wasn't mentioned. Toxic drywall that makes echo,is fragile. This is what I want to learn and do as very few in US. Currently am home processing, spinning local wool blended with alpaca as no desire to learn dye craft.
