NOBODY Outside Britain Understands? I am an old man in my seventies and have never lived in Britain though I have visited it a few times, but as an English speaking South African I not only know every single word but use them myself. Often.

I’m an American but I’m familiar with all of those words simply because a read a lot and I especially love detective stories. Well, many of the best are written by Brits so I came to know all of those words when I was still a teenager and now I’m in my 80s. 😂

There are 170,000 words actively used in English, with many more alternative, archaic, forgotten or specialist words making up a total vocabulary of well over 600,000 words and the language adopts many foreign and slang words each year as well. It also has a complex grammar made up of a mish-mash of several language roots. And, although not technically a &apos;high-context&apos; language, British English is more context-sensitive than American or Australian English as well as being buried under wit, sarcasm, and polite indirectness.<br>As a well-read British English speaker, I keep coming across words and terms I have never heard before, so I can feel the pain of anyone trying to keep up with this wonderful, ever-changing language of ours.

English speakers in South Africa know and use all of these words. Nothing unusual here.
