Often portrayed as a desert prophet clothed in camel’s hair and eating locusts and honey, he is best known as Jesus’ forerunner. A key historical issue is John’s baptism of Jesus. In the ancient world, the person performing a baptism could appear spiritually superior to the person receiving it. Early Christians were unlikely to invent a story that made Jesus appear subordinate, so the baptism was probably historical. The Gospel writers increasingly tried to minimize this problem. Their major difference concerned Jesus’ understanding of himself. John announced coming judgment, but there is little evidence that he expected a particular messianic figure or considered himself one. Jesus, however, appears to have believed that God had appointed him to rule the coming kingdom. He was ultimately executed by the Romans as the “King of the Jews,” a charge never made against John. John’s movement also did not immediately disappear. Acts 19 describes followers of John who had not heard about Jesus years after John’s death, suggesting that the two movements remained distinct for some time.
