Just got done sitting in the wind and the rain of the Aleutian Islands for 9 hours overseeing an overnight diesel transfer of 220,000 gallons. Perfect 5am vid to watch before I sleep for 5 hours and go back to work.

You know things are complicated when the pictures of people who first understood them are in colors.

Surprised not to see CBn in this episode. Cubic BoroNitride is one of the most recent advancements in abrasive science, necessary for grinding and sharpening super high alloy particle metallurgy tool steels used in machines and sometimes knives.
CBn is very close to the hardness of diamond, but actually provides sharper grinding action while also being tougher and more long lasting due to its thermal and compressive resistivity. For certain grinding tasks it'll outperform both mono- & poly-crystalline diamond abrasives 👨‍🔬😅

There is a glaring omission of borates used in insecticides and antifungals.

Boron also prevented the germans from building a graphite moderated nuclear reactor, it has a huge appetite for neutrons and they couldn't make more than gram quantities of ultra pure graphite. The US made tens of thousands of tons for the Hanford reactors. Also, boron tribromide is extremely fun, for certain definitions of the word "fun" . it reacts violently with water, methanol , organics, has a nasty red fume.

24:39 XB-70 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made!
About two weeks ago I was able to visit the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. It was incredible to be able to see all the hundreds of various aircraft that they have there. My main motivation to visit was my desire to see the last surviving XB-70 with my own eyes. I was not disappointed. It's an amazing aircraft and unbelievably HUGE! The XB-70 is a beautiful machine with fantastic lines that still make it look futuristic, even though that aircraft was designed and built about sixty years ago. It's a fantastic museum and definitely recommend visiting if you have the opportunity!

Here in France in our periodic tables, it's still called "Bore".

I never knew this was the problem causing the Valkyrie to be cancelled. What a machine it was though. I thought its enormous size was the reason.

In Turkey growing up they always advertised this as the future element that would make the country super rich. But boron is always more complicated and surprisingly disappointing yet very useful.
