It's come to my attention that some viewers have been messaging my round 2 opponent, accusing him of cheating, calling him names, and sending other hateful messages.

That's NOT okay.

Please do not message or harass my opponent in any way. My video was meant to discuss the tournament situation—not to send people after anyone personally. That's a line we shouldn't be crossing.

Please stop, and let's keep the discussion respectful.

MASSIVE fail by the tournament director, plain and simple. I would never participate in tournaments led by those TDs again. I would file a formal complaint to USCF and/or FIDE for that.. that’s insane.

This is a violation of FIDE laws of chess article 6.11.4 (the player is not allowed to pause the clock for that reason), 11.2.2 and 11.2.3 (the player is not allowed to leave the playing area when it's his move) and 12.1 (the arbiter shall see the laws of chess are observed).
This won't change the result of the game. It can't be changed, but a formal complaint against US chess code of ethics (and FIDE, if needed) should make the director of the tournament comply with laws of chess in the future.

Wow! I'm totally with you on this one Nelson. I've been playing for over 50 years and served as a USCF tournament director for a while and never heard of anything like this. That TD should lose his certification!

A player may stop the clock only to seek the arbiter's assistance.
The arbiter, not the player, decides whether the clocks should remain stopped.
Any intervention should be fair and impartial.
All games were in the same hall,
everyone experienced the same disturbance,
but only your game was paused,
then the arbiter's decision can reasonably be questioned. Tey are expected to avoid giving one player an unintended advantage.
The disturbance affects the whole hall, then either all affected games should be paused, or yours should continue. Stopping only your game changes the time situation.
Please put your objection on record.

I’m a pretty non confrontational person but these are the rare situations that come up in life where I strongly feel you need to throw an absolute fit when they happen or you get run over by bad actors. I’d be asking for a ruling from a higher up tournament director and at the very least make my opponent feel like shit for cheating me and let anyone in earshot know that he’s an angle shooting cheater.

The dude called a timeout. This is 100% legal on all elementary school playgrounds across the continental US. I hope his mommy brought him his orange slices, too!

    That’s insane to me

Makes no sense why he would be allowed to stare at the board if he was “too distracted” to play. Then again… “I do this all the time…” clearly it’s a strategic tool he uses.

File a complaint. I would be furious and probably wouldn’t calmly settle this.

Whether it's legal or not it's definitely unsportsmanlike 💯 It sounds as if the guy has used this "strategy" before from the way he was so sure of himself. I wouldn't want to play against somebody like that because it's clear he doesn't care about fairness.

You have every reason to be upset. The opponent 100% knew what he was doing. That's just straight up cheating and i'll never be convinced otherwise.
