Engines Older Than Your Grandfather, and every single one of them still runs. Some of these machines sat untouched for fifty years. Others never stopped working at all. From a Sherman tank's twin diesel to a triple expansion steam giant that pushes London's water uphill, these engines were built before most of our families owned a car, and they still fire up today. We walk through the aircraft radials, marine diesels, stationary gas engines and steam monsters that survived, and look at why each one was built the way it was, and why it is still turning long after the factory that made it disappeared. Engines in this video: Sherman Tank Engine GM 6046: two 6-71 diesels bolted together to move a thirty ton tank. Sulzer Diesel Engine 1929: Swiss marine diesel from the years when diesel was still proving itself at sea. ASh-62: nine cylinder air cooled radial, still flying on the An-2 biplane today. SKL Els 6VD 18/15 AL-1: East German diesel built to outlast the spare parts supply. Rolls-Royce Meteor Tank Engine: a Merlin with the supercharger stripped off, torque instead of altitude. Old Black Diesel Engine: no badge, no model number, no maker anyone remembers, and still turning. Polar Diesel Engine T3K, 1910: Sweden's Atlas works marine diesel, slow turning and direct reversing. Pratt and Whitney R-4360: twenty eight cylinders in four rows, the engine mechanics called the corncob. National Old Gas Engine: British town gas engine where the flywheel does the real work. NWM RHS518A: Dutch built engine that spent its life driving pumps and generators. Kempton Park Big Triple Steam Engine: a thousand tons of iron using the same steam three times over. Gas Engine La Vergne: exposed valve gear from an era when engines were meant to be watched, not sealed away. Gardner Engine: Manchester's fuel economy legend, fitted to buses and canal boats for fifty year careers. Fairbanks Morse: farm power for places with no electricity and no mechanic within thirty miles. Curtiss-Wright R-3350: the eighteen cylinder B-29 engine that nearly ended the programme by catching fire. Deutz MAH 711: one cylinder, air cooled, no radiator and nothing to freeze. Detroit Diesel 12V149: blown two stroke V12 that screams instead of rumbles. Otto Gas Engine: the 1876 ancestor of every four stroke engine ever built. Deutz MKH 260: stationary engine made for continuous duty, weeks at the same speed. MTU 12V396: compact high output diesel for patrol boats, rail cars and emergency generators. 1917 Snow Gas Engine, 600 horsepower: pipeline compressor the size of a small house. 150 Case Road Locomotive: only nine were ever built, none survived, this one was rebuilt from original drawings. 3 Cylinder Fairbanks Morse: three cylinders for steady generator power without the flicker. 6 Cylinder Hall-Scott Rail Engine: high output gasoline power when everyone else was switching to diesel. 6S37 Allen Diesel Engine: Bedford built inline six for ships and power stations, designed to be rebuilt in place.
