I just read crime and punishment and it was my first by him and I’m OBSESSED. I’m about to reread and go down the Dostoevsky rabbit hole

My favorite part of The Idiot was when Dostoevsky said "and events happened which would make you think this was a novel" (I paraphrased and that's what my translation said)

Everyone can read, but by nature, some are better at being readers and understand books on a different level than others.

I usually only read nonfiction but you have convinced me to give Dostoyevsky a try!

"Above all, do not lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point where he does not discern any truth either in himself or anywhere around him, and thus falls into disrespect towards himself and others."
—from THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV (1879–1880) by Fyodor Dostoevsky

I have three videos dedicated to Dostoevsky on my channel, but unfortunately, hardly anyone has watched them. Thank you very much for your excellent reading guide.❤

Appreciate notes from the underground being mentioned! it's such a good take on post enlightenment rationality! I've also enjoyed reading his letters - they provide a good insight to his psyche and and the experiences that underlie much of his work. If you haven't already you should read his letter to his brother after he was reprieved and sentenced to prison in Siberia for being part of a liberal group that opposed the ruling regime. You should do Kafka next!

Nice guide! I really enjoyed Father Zosima’s role and back story in Bro’s Karamazov. My favorite part of the book. I just read the short story White Nights and that is excellent as well.

When I was in university (around 4 years ago) I met two older men who would meet up everyday, smoke a cig and go on a walk. I would often smoke at the same time so we got talking. One had been a 'problem solver' in the highest levels of Dutch finance, he'd solve the unsolvable. The other had been a painter and philosopher. They knew each other because they were both terminally ill. Before passing they gifted me the collected works of Dostoevsky. Because of this gift I was able to read his entire body of work. The memories of these two remarkable individuals will never leave me. Forever inextricably intertwined with FFD.

For sure my favorite author. I like your order list, but mine would be radically different.

The only book I COULDN'T get through was 'the adolescent'. I tried multiple times as an adolescent but just couldn't finish it!

Brothers Karamazov is the greatest novel ever written.

Hi from the Netherlands! :)
