In this documentary, we explore the extraordinary life of Baldwin I of Jerusalem, one of the most decisive figures of the First Crusade and founder of the Crusader monarchy in the Holy Land. From his youth in the County of Boulogne and his participation alongside his brother Godfrey of Bouillon, to the conquest of Edessa and his coronation as king in Jerusalem in 1100, Baldwin I transformed a fragile military conquest into a kingdom capable of surviving against vastly superior enemies. During his reign, he expanded the borders of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, conquered important coastal cities, and established the political and administrative foundations that would sustain the Frankish presence in the East for more than two centuries. Through medieval sources, Crusader chronicles, and the context of the wars between Christians, Fatimids, and Seljuks, we will analyze the figure of a monarch as admired by his contemporaries as he was controversial for some of his decisions. His rise to power in Edessa, his military campaigns, his political marriages, and his final expedition to Egypt are all part of a story that helped shape the destiny of the Crusader states.
