How did Rome go from being a small community in Latium to becoming the great power of Italy? In this documentary, we explore the origins of Rome, the monarchy, the birth of the Republic, and the wars that gradually transformed the city into a military and political power. Starting with the traditional founding of Rome in 753 BC, we will analyze the formation of the Roman community, the first kings, the reforms attributed to Servius Tullius, and the expulsion of Tarquinius Superbus in 509 BC. We will then follow the evolution of the Roman Republic: the conflict between patricians and plebeians, the creation of the tribunate of the plebs, the Twelve Tables, the expansion against the Etruscans, Latins, and Samnites, and the gradual conquest of Italy. The arrival of Pyrrhus of Epirus will lead Rome to confront one of the great armies of the Hellenistic world. After the Pyrrhic Wars, Rome will become the dominant power on the Italian peninsula. But the next challenge will be much greater: Carthage. Roman intervention in Sicily will lead to the First Punic War (264-241 BC), the first major confrontation between Rome and Carthage. We will analyze the conflict, the evolution of the Roman navy, the Battle of the Aegates Islands, and the harsh consequences the war had for both powers. Finally, we will see how Rome took advantage of Carthage's weakness to seize Sardinia and Corsica, while the Carthaginians decided to rebuild their power in Hispania under the leadership of Hamilcar Barca. And there, a boy destined to become one of Rome's greatest enemies will appear: Hannibal. This documentary is the prologue to the story that will continue with the Second Punic War, Hannibal, the Scipios, and the definitive transformation of Rome into a Mediterranean power.
