you guys crossed onto the wrong side of the tracks 😅 ...... your hotel was in the rundown sector of Athens, which is really a dot in the vast area covered by Athens ...... if you still want to be near the center of the city and all the attractions it offers, then Plaka, Koukaki, Kolonaki, Pangrati, or Ampelokipi are the neighborhoods of choice...... the hotel you stayed at, is right next to Karaiskaki square which is an area under perpetual gentrification, failed gentrification, if I may add..... an area or derelict buildings, graffiti, addiction, street prostitution, etc., that stretches from Karaiskaki square all the way to Omonoia square ...... Athens has outstanding neighborhoods and suburbs, and endless shopping facilities too, including great Malls, but not near Karaiskaki square 😅

Will be taking our third trip to Greece soon….the first two times we did the islands then Athens at the end. So we went from relaxed beaches to urban chaos……although we love the Athens vibe, we don’t want that shock the next trip……so next time we are doing a little Athens , then to some mainland beaches before going home .

Never skip Athens!! It's such an awesome city with so much to offer. I discovered the beautiful Athenian Riviera and all it's lovely beaches too. There's also a cool lake called 'Lake Vouliagmeni' about a 30 minute taxi ride from downtown Athens. Always worth a visit if you have an extra day in the city.

I agree with you on the graffiti, too much of it takes away from the beauty of a city. That applies everywhere for me.
