  Happy to hear your story Derek. Thanks for sharing. You've confirmed I'm not dreaming. I put a large (8" protruding) airtight insert into my stone fireplace. If inserts are flush with opening they only radiate heat off the front. Want to get some sides protruding into the room. What they call a "hearth heater" is a fully stand alone insert/unit that pipes back into the old chimney. First benefit was. Set it and forget it overnight. No need to wake and close dampers after fireplace goes out and cold air floods down the chimney. Burning just weekends, with the stove fan on, (Friday night - Mon. morn), and holidays, cut my electric baseboard heater bill (for 5 mnth/yr.) nearly in half. I was single and left the house daily for work. That was surprising (tracked the bills before and after), and I calculated the stove paid for itself in 3 yrs. Now, my firewood is free, but I have to work at it. Sweat equity does cost some time/money, but I'm solid for power downs. Being retired now at home everyday, there is only a need to stop the fire every week or so to remove the ash and clean the glass. The baseboard heaters only stay on in the bathrooms (got to have a warm bathroom), and may click on in the main rooms around 4 AM. My difference may be that the old fireplace is a massive floor to ceiling, 7 foot wide stone beast that holds and radiates back a lot of heat. Like you, I have enough hot coals to start again without matches in the morning. A big factor is not having central heat. I can close down and zone heat occasional use rooms completely, saving even more.

  What so many of the old timers just don't seem to understand is your point! More efficient new stove is so much better than inefficient old stove! Burn the smoke!

  EPA certified wood stove uses the secondary combustion which is evident in your pictures of the stove going well.  That adds 33% to your heat output when using the same type of wood.  Good for you, you have now lowered the amount of wood that you will need to cut into the future.   The next upgrade is when you need to reside your house.  At that time start with the windy side of the house and add an inch of hard insulation and 1/2 inch of plywood prior to your siding and that will add tremendously to the insulation value of the wall.  Also if you have a flat ceiling, add more insulation above your ceiling.   Thank you for this review!! I have the exact same issue. Old stove 5-6 cords for season, 2x4 house build, leaky doors, 8” chimney, Going to upgrade for sure

  Hey it's work and it's all good having a wood stove.i use mine every winter here in South TEXAS.i have it on right now I burn mesquite and oak.my aunt gave me this wood stove and it's been awesome I love getting out there cutting and bucking up wood and the benefits  keeps you healthy chopping up some wood with axe and a maul..

  The best way to save wood is using a RecoHeat in conjunction with your stove .they are brilliant .... had kne in for 3 years ....cant revommend enough..

  Man I miss having a wood burning fireplace! We had a fireplace insert in the house I grew up in, it was our main source of heat for many years and worked really well.

  Before you add insulation, close up all the air leaks first.
