You made me time travel about 55 years to being in 3rd year of junior school (what they call year 5 now). The name of my teacher was Miss Gibbons and she was extremely into handicrafts and music. She brought in a fleece from a Jacobs sheep and we all got a chance to card, spin (on a hand spindle), and dye (with onion skins, elderberries, and some moss or lichen). Then using a combination of bought yarn, fleece, our spun wool, and some fabric strips we wove little wall hangings that were turned into calendars that we took home for Christmas. Such wonderful memories.

Thank you for reminding me why wool yarn costs what it does 🙏🏼

About fifty years ago my father bought 3 fleeces and now I can see what my mother had to do to it to clean and card it. After that she sowed the bats between two layers of fabric and made at least 5 duvets out of it.  The last one I carded en sowed myself. That was 30 years ago. We are still sleeping under it and loving it.

How fun!! I saved my 3 collies undercoat for 35 years. I removed all the VM before sending it off to a Mill to be spun & blended with merino. IT'S MAGNIFICENT!  I crocheted a shawl & now when I miss them, I wrap my shawl around me & I remember their love & devotion. 🐾🐾💕

It's an amazing transformation from the dirty fleece to the pale white batt!

My mum was a keen spinner. She used to say the water needs to be the temperature of blood. It can cool once the fleece is in but not to start with. She always spun her fleece before washing. She said the lanolin is marvellous for your skin. I envy you having four!

I’m now 80 and years ago did it all and have great fond memories of the whole process. That breed grows lovely fleece for spinning, strong warp for weaving, great yarn for knitting and crocheting. Thanks much for reviving my memories!🦌💌❤️🐑😍🥰👏👏👏👏🫶

That fleece will become beautiful yarn. I always love seeing the transformation of a dirty tangled fleece to lovely soft wool.
