Here's another tidbit about submarine propellers that wasn't mentioned: They will always have an odd number of blades.

We actually eliminated a lot of machine noise by putting everything on rubber dampeners. Which took the soviets disturbingly long to copy.

Still need to wrap around my head how large submarines are enough to vertically store ICBMs

Because that's where the very large sonar array is located.

That Toshiba story sounds like something straight out of a spy thriller!

Most people don't know it but Toshiba came within a gnats whisker of being permanently banned from ALL sales in the US. There was even a push for banning the sales of Toshiba products that were already physically in the US. It is impossible to explain just how damaging this was to us and keep it UNCLAS.

Regarding sonar, my ship, the USS Reuben James FFG-57 (RIP) was in port, and I was in radio, when we heard someone light off their sonar. Mind you, radio is a full three decks above the waterline, and is pretty noisy on it's own? Yet it was OMGBBQ LOUD and scared the bejabbers out of me. I ran out to the boat deck just in time to hear two more pings. We were in Pearl Harbor, and we were tied up at Pier 3, which is pretty close to the front gates. I heard that pulse BOUNCE between the sub base, the hotel piers, the dry docks, Ford Island, then up into Aiea, Waimalu, Pearl City and back again. It bounced off the mountains and back again. It was bad enough three decks above the water, so if any divers had been doing work down below, they'd have been killed.

Two Australian divers were injured in the South China Sea when a Chinese frigate intentionally pinged them with active sonar.
