You go to dinner at your Polish girlfriend's parents' house—her aunts, grandmothers, uncles, and other cousins are there. Many of them don't speak English. Secondly, without knowledge of Polish, it's impossible to fully immerse yourself in Polish culture—it's simply impossible.

The story with the dude not realizing that he can speak english happened to me. I had really shit self-esteem when i was a teen and i was genuinely surprised when i went to england and everyone was shocked with how good my english was

I'm Polish and live in Toruń. I speak Polish perfectly, much better than the average Pole, because I love the language. Most Poles make tons of spelling and grammar mistakes, so I really wouldn't expect a foreigner to know even the basics of my language. 😅 I'm impressed by every expat's attempt to speak Polish, seriously. ❤ Every single one. I lived abroad for a few years, in a Scandinavian country, and those languages weren't that difficult for me, although much more difficult than English. I really enjoy speaking English, but... not in front of Poles. Because while they don't judge foreigners, they judge each other. And I know we're known for that. I recently saw some Japanese people on YouTube speaking Polish, and my jaw dropped. So, anyone who learns Polish earns my deep respect. Your English is excellent, and I suspect you stand out linguistically among your compatriots. All the best to you! (You make great videos, I enjoy watching them!)

Well, while I agree with all the things you said, there's one more.

You can live in Poland without learning Polish and we (Poles) are fully OK with that, since we know how difficult to learn our language is. That being said... IF you want to become a Pole, you HAVE TO speak Polish. Until you learn our language you'll be always a guest here and never "one of us".

The rule is very simple: If you want to call yourself a Pole, you need to speak Polish.
I think 99,9% Poles will agree with this statement.

Additionally, if you marry a Pole, you'll be quietly expected to learn at least a little bit of Polish, to keep up with conversations during family meetings.

So, yes - you can live in Poland without learning Polish, but you can naver be considered a Pole until you do so.

I have a friend who married a Polish woman. She didn't speak English when they first met, but worked hard for around 2-3 years to learn English just for him. She left to the US to be with him after their Polish wedding. They have 2 boys now and have been married for around 20 years. The problem is he's never really made any efforts to learn her language. He can't communicate with her parents when they visit Poland because of this. However, they're in love, so things worked out.

I'm about A2 level Polish (studying intermittently for a year). Trying to speak Polish as much as possible. For example ordering tickets, checking in, ordering food at Bary Mleczne. What I really appreciate is that people stuck with me in Polish, helpfully correcting me. I did get a little stuck at one airport Straż graniczna - I handed my British Passport, but was asked where I was going in Polish 😀
