  When a plane needs to make an emergency landing, and can&apos;t make it back to the airport, a freeway is the best bet.<br>The rotary blade flying down the parking lot and lodging itself into a building was nuts!

  When I was 9 years old - just a few years ago - my family went on a cross country trip. &nbsp;We left our home in North Central PA late Friday night, and while my mother, my grandmother and my sister, cousin and I slept, Dad drove through the night and on &nbsp;through the next day. &nbsp;Dad had planned the trip, and there were to be no &quot;tourist&quot; stops until we got to Nebraska. &nbsp;In Iowa, on that Saturday morning, we were driving through a fierce thunderstorm. &nbsp;Lightning struck a bridge over a small creek, right in front of the car in front of us, causing the bridge to break from it&apos;s pilons and the end toward us bounced up and landed with the edge right on top of the edge of the road where it had formerly been joined. &nbsp;The car in front of us, driven by a young guy, was left hanging on this large hunk of bridge, its chassis just balanced on the edge, tottering back and forth. &nbsp;The other side had tumbled into the creek below, and this kid was sure his car was going to keep right on going into the ravine the bridge covered. &nbsp;My dad, a take-charge-kind of guy, immediately jumped out of our car and talked to kid down, quite literally. &nbsp;It&apos;s been 57 years, but I remember the sight of that kid&apos;s car hanging on that bridge, and my dad jogging toward it, as clear as anything.

  I don’t know about other places, but most highways in America are designed to be wide enough for small planes to land on them in case of emergency. As a pilot, you’re actually supposed to know at all times where the closest highway is in case of an emergency landing. Same with fields and bodies of water.
