  Keyboard warriors activate!  Lol.  I'm sure to hear what an idiot I am.  The way I see it, if you aren't making mistakes, then you aren't learning anything new.  I'm often doing things that are new to me or at the edge of my skill level, so mistakes are inevitable.  It's just extra painful that this one really amounted to forgetting a simple step rather than learning something I didn't know.  Brace before you weld!  And the porta power explosion...was that really a mistake?  The more I think of it, cast iron has no business being anywhere near a porta power unit, ever.  Using cast iron with anything involving hydraulic cylinders is a terrible idea.  So I will happily let you all know, that is a Vevor porta power, and I whole heartedly DO NOT RECOMMEND!  I guess you could say buying a budget porta power was the mistake.  But at the end of the day, let's not forget the real important part...I got a a new welder!  Lol!  Have an awesome (and safe!) weekend everybody!

  Welder for 25 years. Always apply heat when straightening on the side you want the material to pull to. A dull red will move steel the most. Just like when you weld it pulls towards the heat, when applying heat with a torch on the opposite side of the weld, you are essentially counter acting the heat you applied with the weld, if that makes sense. <br><br>Side note with dual shield: your volts were good, if you turn your wire down to 280-300, vertical up stringers are much easier. Weaving dual shield too much can cause slag inclusions. <br><br>Hopefully these tips help in the future, love your videos.

  Jon, you are NOT an idiot! You do the same things that we do. And what is that? You forgot to take five. Something I learned in the early days of my engineering/construction career was to take AT LEAST five minutes before each task to study the job. <br>1. Will I need additional equipment? <br>2. Will i need additional manpower?<br>3. Is my repair item properly supported?<br>4. Are all POSSIBLE energy sources neutralized?<br>5. Are additional personnel observing my task in case of emergency?<br>6. Are my chosen tools and equipment adequate for the task?<br>7. Is this task necessary?<br>8. Do i need more time to study this task? Time is more available than human life.<br><br>Jon, thank you so much for your high personal integrity. By sharing this incident, there is just no telling how many others may have been spared injury or heartache.

  You did alright. Almost 50 years a welder and fabricator. I have made some boo boos myself. And seen some crazy things happen over those years. Watching you brought back some wild memories to say the least. I still dream about my old job to this day. This video helped a bit to take my mind off losing my Wife of over 45 years.   I remember working with another carpenter one time when we fixed one of our major mistakes. With a big smile he says anyone can screw things up but it takes a real good carpenter to make it right again. Guess you are a real good welder now.
