The bullet holes on the roof of the market, Souq Al-Hamadiyya, that you said were from the war are actually from French gunfire from during the 1925 revolt against the French occupation of the country. They were never repaired I believe to serve as a memorial. Fighting during the recent civil war was not in the central neighbourhoods of Damascus but rather in the Damascus suburbs and other parts of the country.
