Hello Sam!!! I'm from Romania the country south of Ukraine, please don't judge the civilians to harshly they simply didn't know anything about the effects if radiation.

I'd also recommend the companion podcast, with the show's creator, Craig Mazin, discussing the research done for the show, and how the show was made. It available on HBO's youtube channel (or wherever you listen to podcasts). really interesting.

This a really good series...one of the best ever made...but the producers did get some things wrong. Some things were changed intentionally for the purposes of storytelling, and the makers of the series put in a series of notes at the end of the last episode of the series explaining some of them. They also have a podcast that they put out along with the show in which they talk about other things they altered from the history and why.

However, I do recommend you check out the History vs Hollywood article on Chernobyl when you are done watching the whole series, so you can find out about the other things that the producers got wrong that they do not admit to. Definitely wait until you are done with the series so you do not spoil anything for yourself.

Always keep in mind that this is not any kind of government that you are really familiar with...this is the USSR in 1986. For one thing...know that none of the people in Pripyat were even allowed to evacuate...there was no freedom of movement for the vast majority of people in the Soviet Union...they could not leave to get to safety until the State actually told them that they could, and they could only go to where the State told them to go.

That also means we are not talking about some company or corporation...the Soviet State built and operated their nuclear reactors themselves. Everyone that worked at Chernobyl...both before and after the explosion...was a government worker...from the top managers down to the janitors.

One thing I will add, is that the more I learn about the history of the RBMK reactor and of the Chernobyl power plant, the more I feel that a lot of context is left out of the show, and it could have been more accurate if it had revealed some of that.

5:50 its becuase of what happened at chernobyl that we have such a good understanding of the consequences are to a nuclear disaster. They had information on how to protect themselves but it wasn't public knowlage. The dangers were infact even hidden from citizens becuase there couldn't be nothing to question the power of soviet nuclear energy.

I remember this. Strange times, to learn something dangerous is coming through the air, that will damage our land and farmanimals..in Norway😮

In the USSR at that time much of the population was not taught about radiation. It had been decided decades before they had no need to know. The firemen who responded had not been told of a radiation hazard, and they had no equipment to deal with it anyway. As they collapsed other firemen from other towns were pulled in to replace them. The new ones were not told either. Throughout the emergency workers sent to deal with the emergency were not briefed as that would make them reluctant to go there. Likewise records of exactly who had been assigned to go to the reactor were carefully destroyed. Lacking records to prove a person had worked at the accident site the Soviet and later Russian government could (and still does) deny any connection between the event and the subsequent fatal cancers of those men and their families (many returned home with clothes covered with fallout or deadly souvenirs they hadn't been warned of), Officially fewer than 2 dozen died of radiation from the accident. Unofficially the number may be closer to a million.
