Though I am by no means a Tory, I must concede that Harold MacMillan was one of the best PMs of the post-war period. Smart, pragmatic, unflabbable, and cordial, his achievements are many, including ushering in the greatest era of material prosperity Britian has yet known, solidifying the welfare state set up by Attlee and Bevin, and recongizning "the wind of change" that portended the UK's transition from an imperial power to a regional partner in the Trans-Atlantic partnership. He righted an unsteady ship, and seldom let partisian politics or personal intrigue impair his course of judgment. All and all, a tremendous statesmen!
