I never thought that it was telling us that wealth = happiness. But that having confidence, and using your talents could lead to better wealth.

The ending wasn't money equals happiness... The timeline changed because Lorraine actually fell in love with George... she didn't just end up with him out of pity and wanting to mother him... standing up for himself and protecting "his girl" gave him confidence... which prompted him to pursue writing... and it just gave them a more upscale and affluent lifestyle... Lorraine also didn't become an alcoholic... so they were into fitness and they ate more nutritious food so they looked better... and their confidence encouraged their kids to be confident and improved their lot in life as well...

Doc Brown, is Marty's hero, because of the lack of his Fathers relationship

as somebody who lived in the 80's .... I can tell you bullying took place and if you were getting bullied and fought back the Teachers would yell at you too

I think the ending just highlights that George is extremely successful as a writer and serves as a counterpoint to him not placing any value in his stories.

19:23 I don’t think ending is showing strictly “wealth equals happiness”. It’s that self-confidence and taking (reasonable) risks leads to wealth and happiness. I think BttF2 confirms this, Biff and Loraine are rich as fuck and yet completely miserable.

I don’t even remember the monetary reward was even present in the ending. I always remember the reward being Marty’s parents’ relationship and his father’s confidence and self worth improving. Maybe I’m the outlier but I enjoy that ending because it’s what stood my mind

The tv thing is true. Even well into the 1970s and 1980s, owning more than two TVs was a sign of doing well.

I think the moral of the movie was about perseverance, having more self-confidence, and standing up for what's right. It was never about money buying happiness, but that perseverance can lead you to a happier, more successful life, so having more money is just a side-effect.

Side notes: The homeless man we see in the 80s sleeping on the bench is Red, former mayor of Hill Valley in the 50s.

Think of TVs in the 50s like PCs in the 80s. Not every home had one, let alone multiple. And look at us now--not only are our "PCs" more powerful by orders of magnitude, they're also small enough and affordable enough that most people have one that they take with almost anywhere (your smart phone), probably have more than one for each person (gaming consoles, tablets, laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, etc.), many people also replace them every few years, some even every year. That speaks to advancements in technology--which is at the same time beyond what people could have imagined, and also not as advanced as they thought it could have been.

I think Crispin blew that way out of proportion because if you analyse the ending, that's not the message they are going with...
George and Lorraine aren't boasting about their riches they are laughing together and celebrating how Biff bought them together George is happy not because of what the success of his novel gave him in riches but he's happy because of the success itself, the riches are a side affect of the happiness George already has but the film makes it clear that the riches really don't mean that much to him.

Many people ask the question why marty is so cool and his family is so uncool in comparison to him, and the reason is this explained in this dialogue....
Strickland: No mcfly has ever amounted to anything in the history of hill valley
Marty: Yeah well history is going to change
Marty is cool guy because he wants to break the mold of failure that has plagued his family for generations.
