This warms my heart!!! I grew up in Wisconsin baling 4,000-6,000 bales of alfalfa for dairy feed. My 1st job was to drive the tractor on the baler while my Dad loaded the wagon. I was 7 or 8 yrs old. Got to the end of the field and Dad would jump off the wagon, run up to the tractor and turn it around to get me started on the next windrow. Great times as a kid “WITHOUT “ video games. AND, it taught us responsibly ❤

Maybe the best video you have ever produced. It showed all aspects of farming... including recycling equipment, repairing equipment, to the joys, challenges, and frustrations of the process. Well done.

You have not lived until you spend a summer hauling hay, water melons and firewood. Makes you glad school is starting.

I learned many life lessons as a 10 year old in 1970, on a farm in Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan. That summer I learned how to drive a ford 1/2 ton, 3 on the tree, manual tranny. Then a swather, combine and then the big grain truck. For the next 5 years each summer I spent on that farm becoming a young man. It was my best friends farm and his family were incredible. Sadly my best friend died in a plane crash at the young age of 27. To this day, nothing but great memories and a strong work ethic that has guided me into 65 years of age, all from that farm at Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan.

Hey Laura, I have 3 of that exact rake. That gearbox where you pull the lever to engage the spinning thing, there is a nut that exposes the inside of the gearbox. You need to put gear oil in it or you will burn up the gearbox. I learned this the hard way. Just want the best for you and grant!

This episode sure brought back lots of memories. When I was still on our farm back in the day, we done 500 to 1,000 bales a summer. If I may make a few suggestions (if y'all going to actually stay baling hay), 1) The rake - (now this is how we did it) when you adjust the pickup teeth, lower them down to where they are about an inch or two below the cut grass. This ensures full pickup of the cut hay for the windrow. 2) The sickle mower - Check to see what angle your cutting bar is set. It should be level, which would leave a grass height of about 4 inches. This will give a full cut of the grass. Now, if you was going to graze the ground, you can angle it a bit for a higher grass. At the end of the sickle bar, it appears you are missing (what we called a swath guide) it is a round rod that goes on top of the swath shoe to guide the cut hay to the inside of the windrow and leaves a clear spot for when you cut your next swath as a guide for your inner skid plate to run. 3) The baler - The plunger knife may need to be sharpened, it appeared to not be cutting the hay well. Shear bolts - get used to carrying in the tool box a package of them. You'll be shearing those often. If you are keeping the baler, suggest you do a complete full high pressure wash of it clean every bit of dirt, debris, and excess grease from everything. Then check for any excessive wear of parts and then re-grease and it will last you a long time. Our policy on the farm, end of the hay season the baler got full pressure washed checked, greased and then put up. If you storing outside the equipment and not in a shed, put tarps over the equipment. It will help protect the equipment. Ours was always in a machine shed.

My family has been farming corn and soybeans my entire life. Some of their neighbors bailed hay and alfalfa. There were many summers that they were short-handed, and All the neighbors kids and their friends would gather up and “Hall Hay”. Load all the bales on a wagon, then drive around to the barn and unload and stack in the barn. GREAT TIMES WITH FAMILIES AND FRIENDS

OMG memories flooding back from mt teens in the 80's.. Many summers spent doing circles just like this. Many uses for different hay. The more you mow, the less weed you grow. I cant wait to see Laura haul and stack...there's the work. Suns out, Guns out ! Let's Go !

I remember stacking hay to the rafters of a pole barn as a teen. That was really good money for a teen to earn. I enjoyed it even though it was hard work. Lots of walking following that baler.
