John MacArthur, Christianity Today and MLK: Was Martin Luther King Jr. a Christian?

  I'm a semi-retired Baptist minister. I am 80 years old. For more than 50  years I have told people MLK was not a Christian. I knew of his immoral lifestyle. I knew he never preached the risen Christ. But you can't convince most people he was not saved. I'm glad that Justin chose these two black brothers in Christ to tackle this misconception of MLK. At best MLK was a social warrior. That will not get him into heaven.

  One can not be a Christian and deny the deity of Christ and essentially call Him a liar.

  The main problem with the view that King was not Christian is the idea that salvation is based on doctrinal beliefs alone. &nbsp;That is simply not the case. &nbsp;You CAN be a Christian and be in error, or believe erroneous things. &nbsp;Remember how Paul had to correct Peter in Galatians 2? &nbsp;<br><br>Now it is true that Christians should believe certain fundamental articles of faith, but regeneration of the Spirit does not depend on having every little doctrinal belief correct. &nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>The second problem is that we have to take into account that Dr. King studied at liberal schools that gave him liberal coursework and readings, and that he had to interact with that material for grades. &nbsp;The things he says in school papers cannot be found in sermons he preached, to my knowledge. &nbsp;In fact, in one of his greatest works, Strength to Love, he made this profound statement against atheistic materialism: <br><br>&quot;Having no place for God or for eternal ideas, materialism is opposed to both theism and idealism. This materialistic philosophy leads inevitably into a dead-end street in an intellectually senseless world. &nbsp;To believe that human personality is the result of the fortitus interplay of atoms and electrons is as absurd as to believe that a monkey by hitting typewriter keys at random will eventually produce a Shakesperean play. &nbsp;Sheer magic! &nbsp;It is much more sensible to say with Sir James Jeans, the physicist, that &apos;the universe seems to be nearer to a great thought than to a great machine,&apos; or with Arthur Balfour, the philosopher that &apos;we now know too much about matter to be materialists.&apos; &nbsp;Materialism is a weak flame that is blown out by the breath of mature thinking.&quot; &nbsp;(p. 69,70, Beacon Press edition). &nbsp;<br><br>These are wise and profound words that any evangelical today can agree with, and it is a tragedy that some people are determined to slight this man&apos;s legacy by only giving you part of the story based mainly on school papers. &nbsp;I suggest people study more deeply, and take into account the nature of what&apos;s presented from school papers that may not reflect what Dr. King truly believed in his heart, but what he learned and parroted from required readings at the time. <br><br>Dr. King had many good and theologically sound things to say, and we need to investigate those as well, not just the snippets from Virgil from school papers.

  My brothers in Christ this was such a good conversation. I had no idea about MLK’s true beliefs. Very enlightening, and I also really enjoyed the dynamic between the three of you. Would love to see Virgil and Darryl on your channel more often. God bless you Justin

  Very excellent work. I’ve never heard much about what MLK actually believed and this is absolutely shocking. Keep up the good work of sharing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus and exposing errors. May the Lord continue to bless you and your ministry. 🙏
