Granny tried to put Paimon in her own son first. That's why he took his own life saying she was trying to put people in him.

Paimon skipped over Peter because Annie kept him away until Charlie was born and that’s why the grandma latched onto Charlie and probably instantly put paimon into Charlie because Peter wasn’t accessible to her.

Fun fact: Paimon is depicted as riding a camel, and camel trainers use tongue clicks to command them. The reason why Charlie tongue-clicks is because Paimon was inside her, but in order to bring him to his true power he needs a male host. That is why Grandma Leigh wanted Charlie to be a boy. The entire movie is the coven attempting to move Paimon to Peter. We THINK it is Charlie's soul but it is Paimon. The only time we experience Charlie's soul is during the ritual when Annie channels Charlie and that is why Charlie sounded scared and confused.

Just fyi, the whole movie was the actual ritual for Paimon. Everything happened the way it was supposed to and the cult made everything happen, from Charlie's death to Peter becoming Charlie's new host. There are 3 scenes involving Annie, Peter and Charlie where their bodies and souls were prepared for possession. Charlie as a baby being fed a bottle from Grandma with black flecks of something in the bottom of the bottle, Joann giving Annie the tea with black flecks in it and Peter's friend with the long hair and partial man bun laced his weed under the bleachers with the black flecks of herb cause Peter's friend is part of the cult, he's in the final shot, naked and with a partial man bun.

On some instinctive level Annie understood what was going on. Thats why she tried to stop her pregnancy with Peter and why she almost killed him while sleepwalking. On a deeper subconscious level she was trying to save his soul.

Charlie was never a "real" person. Paimon was instantly put into Charlie as soon as she was born, so they still call him Charlie. Peter wasnt picked because Annie and her mom werent on good terms, so she didnt have access to Peter.

Annie's Mother set all of these events in motion LONG before her own death.
Also, notice that when that little paint bottle toppled over and spilled on Joan's phone#, it was NOT TOUCHED, but tipped over on it's own.

16:04 you can see in Peter’s eyes the moment it clicks that everything the night before happened. It isn’t until Annie is screaming that he knows for real.
