Why are Indian companies buying British motorcycle brands? A look at TVS Motor and Norton

  Bajaj Auto just took over Austrian KTM they also make Triumphs

  Indian ownership of Royal Enfield was the best thing that happened to the brand. The difference in reliability and quality is night and day, not to mention the love that the owners and Indian people have for the brand. KTM being taken over by Bajaj could be good but only time will tell.

  More than Indians, Africans love TVS Motors. Their bikes are engineered for low resources, low maintenance, easy repairability and wide range of use. <br>Norton will not just survive, but thrive, kick and be wildly alive for the next half-century at the very least if not more. <br>The number of motorcycles sold in all of England in a year doesn&apos;t cross the monthly sales in a medium sized town in India and therefore independent companies in the west are better of having a larger company with a wider user base than they are used to. <br><br>Norton forever.

  What makes a company successful??? Easy, more sale. Large companies like TVS are large because of large sales. They know how to develop a product which appeals mass market. So Norton is in good hands.

  TVS is a hardcore engineering company. I dont know if you know this, but TVS once made a mechanical keyboard (tvs bharat gold) and it ended up being one of the best mechanical keyboards of the time at the price.<br><br>That is the only mechanical keyboard tvs ever made. They changed the mechanical market keyboard in India and left without a follow up product.

  Royal Enfield are the dominant seller of premium motorcycles in India. They sell upwards of 60 thousand units every month in India itself, no other manufacturer even comes close in the premium segment. <br><br>Indians really have an appetite for these old school british engines; long stroke, heavy on the torque, thumpy engines. It is such a huge market that it even forced Honda to create their own RE competitor, the CB350 (or GB350 internationally).<br><br>Bajaj also wanted a piece of that market, they first tried to sort of challenge RE with the Dominar 400 (the advertisement of the bike involved them just trying to mock the RE 350, which made the intention behind creating that bike plenty obvious). It used a derivative of the KTM 390 engine. It was a decently successful motorcycle but nobody really saw it as a RE alternative. They then partnered with Triumph and thus came the Triumph 400 bikes.<br><br>Hero, which is the biggest 2 wheeler company also wanted a piece of that market for which they wanted a household name as well, then came the partnership with Harley Davidson under which they sold the Harley X440 and also under their own name, the Mavrick 440 (these have the same sort of long stroke thumpy torquey engines). But to be fair Hero has been making banger motorcycles ever since they said they wanted to have more premium motorcycles in their lineup (having endless pool of money does really help in R&amp;D). They are synonymous with commuter bikes but want to evolve their image as India&apos;s economy is also growing and they know demand for premium offerings is also increasing in the country. And boy have they been delivering (not just talking about the 440 platform, they have really competitive sporty offerings as well now which even go up against KTMs)<br><br>Mahindra has been trying to do the same with the Yezdi and Jawa name of bikes with little success, and now with BSA. <br><br>And just like that, TVS also took the opportunity and grabbed up Norton. They have them developing a Royal Enfield competitor as of now. <br><br>This is the main purpose behind Indian compaines buying British brands. They want a share of that Royal Enfield market and they need a household name to do so. Don&apos;t expect Norton to be making any new BIG bikes. Expect their focus to shift entirely to the sub 700cc category in terms of R&amp;D. They&apos;ll continue producing the V4 and the Commando as they will serve more or less as a marketing tool and a goodwill generator for the smaller Nortons when they will eventually hit the market.

  In India you barely see an young man not into motor cycling. Norton is in safest hands.

  Royal Enfield was British bike, we Indian love it and now it is a world wide brand. We kept the history and the origin of the bike. I’m sure Norton brand will be safe in India.
