I agree with everything you said but the part where you said wood chips in potting soil mix is rare in North America. This couldn't be further from the truth. I literally cant get any potting soil mix in my area that doesn't contain a bunch of wood chips. I dislike that fact very much. And its been this way for at least 6-7 years. Greetings from Alaska.

Miracle-gro potting soil contains wood pieces, sometimes trash.

I'm guessing wood chips in the soil is used as a filler. Shrink flation- lower quality- higher prices at play.
