  Sheffield lad of 73 years here Becky and I share your grief. There are areas a ten minute stroll from my house that are absolute ghettoes. A pleasant 45 minute stroll into the city centre has now morphed into a 30 minute 'scurry' through a litter-strewn 'Beirut theme park'. The disapproving glances I receive as I pass through 'their' territory are very unwelcoming. Brings tears to my old eyes

  I feel bad for you.  It must be heartbreaking to see so many big changes in your childhood community.  We always want to see people enjoying themselves and seeing familiar areas that bring back sweet memories.  There is nothing racist about wanting to hear people speaking the same language and dressing in familiar ways.  That is what makes the area our home.

  My wife went on the bus to Rotherham whilst i was working in Dinnington. She phoned me to ask what time I was leaving work as she wanted picking up. Her words were ' its horrible, get me out of here, I'll walk to the station and you can pick me up there as the town centre is an unsafe sh*thole'. Oh dear, says it all!. ❤

  I've lived in Rotherham all my life 67 years and it's now like living in a foreign country. The town centre is ruined and no longer safe.
