Fall Asleep To | The Complete History of Operation Deadlight —116 U-Boats Sunk After the War | WW2 When Nazi Germany surrendered in May 1945, more than a hundred surviving U-boats passed into Allied hands. Many were gathered in British ports, stripped of useful equipment, and prepared for disposal under Operation Deadlight, the postwar program that sent captured German submarines to the bottom of the North Atlantic. Tonight on Pillows of the Past, discover the complete history of Operation Deadlight — 116 U-Boats Sunk After the War—the surrender of the U-boat fleet, concentration of submarines at Loch Ryan and Lisahally, Allied decisions over what to keep or destroy, towing operations into the Atlantic, scuttling charges, naval gunfire, aircraft attacks, and the difficulties of sinking worn-out boats in winter seas. This documentary also examines why the Allies chose destruction instead of preserving most of the fleet. Postwar agreements limited how many German submarines the victorious powers could retain, while many surviving boats were obsolete, damaged, or expensive to maintain. The operation produced its own practical problems. Tow lines parted, submarines foundered before reaching their assigned positions, and some required repeated attacks before finally sinking. What had once been one of Nazi Germany's most feared weapons ended as rows of empty hulls under Allied control. The U-boats destroyed under Operation Deadlight had served in a campaign that caused enormous losses among merchant sailors, naval personnel, and civilians. This documentary examines their postwar disposal strictly as military and maritime history without glorifying the force that operated them. Designed for nighttime listening, relaxation, study, and sleep, this documentary offers a calm and carefully researched journey through surrendered submarine pens, towing convoys, winter seas, demolition teams, naval gunfire, and the final fate of Germany's U-boat fleet. This documentary features an audio-first narration designed for relaxation, sleep, and immersive historical storytelling.
