As a seventh generation cattle rancher who inherited much of what I needed, do not quit your 9-5.

Don't get started big, think like a beekeeper who splits hives--patience, time and a slow wind up as you learn.

You can run a mobile chicken coop on the same land as your sheep/goats/cattle and have some extra income without additional land requirements. Owning livestock also comes with the cost saving benefit of having endless eggs and red meat. Starting out ranching with 200 head of sheep/goats could get messy/risky. I think starting out with 50 spring lambs for 150-200/head and a couple hundred chickens while keeping your day job would be better than going all in. Keep the female lambs the next spring and buy 50 more if things go well year 1, retain the females again on year 3 and your at 200 head. Great video, again.

My granddad said he had a neighbor that went broke so he bought a bunch of sheep and dug himself out of a hole. So then he finally had enough money to get back into cattle. Then he went broke again and had to do sheep till he retired 😂

Just started my 8 ewe flock of hair sheep. Almost able to replace my day job income. 😂 Our philosophy is to start small, keep costs low, and scale intelligently.

I have a 320 acre ranch in Montana, I sold all my cows years ago, I find, the cost of the cattle actually that's much higher profit for me in the stock market. I was lucky if I made 10% off the cost of the cattle, in other words the value of the cattle, wouldn't even profit me 10%, and I had to work all the time to get that. The dividend stock market funds I don't have to do anything. And it's not just the cost of the cattle, if someone starting off would have to buy the land, I've had recent offers as high as 2 million on my land if someone had to start out and actually buy the range land and the infrastructure and the cattle there is no way in hell they would bring in enough money to even come close to making the payments. My place is paid for but that's only because I bought it 30 years ago, when it didn't seem like anybody wanted it. Now I only do a grazing lease to a family that runs cattle on it during the summer. And when you're in cold harsh climates like Montana your death tolls can easily go from 10% all the way up to 50% or more. Calves die cows get stuck in ponds, sometimes get out and get hit by trains. The only people that do well in cattle are the ones with the federal grazing leases that you can't really get anymore. Like the Taylor grazing lease, on Federal Land, but to buy that lease from the owner almost cost as much as the land would.
