Andrew Mellon Took the Jury Away From His Wife. The Verdict That Cleared Him Came Too Late

Andrew Mellon ran the U.S. Treasury for three presidents and founded the National Gallery of Art. First, according to his biographer, he had Pennsylvania's divorce law changed so his wife could not have a jury. In 1899, a nineteen-year-old Englishwoman named Nora McMullen turned down the Pittsburgh banker in a letter: "You must see it is a mistake… it would mean nothing but unhappiness for us both." She married him anyway. A decade later he filed for divorce, hired detectives, placed every first-class lawyer in the region on retainer, and — by the account of historian David Cannadine — used the Pennsylvania Republican machine to remove the jury from cases like hers. She was left with four months a year with her children, and a court order that kept them inside one county. Twenty years later, the same man faced impeachment charges on the House floor, was spared by a grand jury, and was taken before the Board of Tax Appeals. The verdict that finally cleared Andrew Mellon of fraud came 103 days after his death.
