The Brilliant Design of the Frigate

On August 19, 1812, cannonballs fired at point-blank range from the British warship HMS Guerriere bounced off the oak sides of the American frigate USS Constitution, and a British sailor reportedly shouted that her sides were made of iron — earning the nickname "Old Ironsides." The video argues this wasn't secret armor but pure engineering, traced to designer Joshua Humphreys, who drew up the ship in Philadelphia in 1794. The video opens with the dilemma that frustrated navies for over a century: ships of the line like HMS Victory carried more than 100 guns but were slow and clumsy, while sloops, brigs and corvettes were quick but nearly defenseless. Around the 1740s and 1750s, the French Navy pioneered a long, narrow warship with one powerful gun deck — the frigate — able to destroy anything smaller and outrun anything bigger. The engineering breakdown starts with the hull: a length-to-beam ratio near 4:1, a rounded underwater cross-section, a sharp bow that cut through waves and fine stern lines. Humphreys went further, framing the Constitution with dense live oak from the swamps of Georgia and the Carolinas, thicker and closely spaced frames, and 44 guns where European frigates carried 28–32, so British 12-pound shots bounced off at point-blank range. Copper sheathing, produced by Paul Revere's rolling mill in Canton, Massachusetts, kept barnacles off the hull and killed shipworms. The rigging section covers the three masts, over 30 sails, 2,800 square meters of canvas, block-and-tackle systems and elite topmen aloft. A single gun deck kept the center of gravity low, allowing heavy 24-pounder long guns and short-range 32-pounder carronades. Building a single frigate consumed about 60 acres of forest — roughly 1,500 trees — took one to three years and cost around $300,000 in 1797, a quarter of a ship of the line's price. The concept proved itself in the War of 1812: the Constitution, drilled hard by Captain Isaac Hull, destroyed the Guerriere in about 30 minutes, stunning the Admiralty and The Times in London. Steam power and ironclads later made wooden frigates obsolete, but today's guided-missile frigates still perform the same role the class invented. What the video doesn't have room for is the actual structural trick behind all that strength. Joshua Humphreys' real innovation, according to the U.S. Naval Institute (usni.org/magazines/naval-history-magazine/1994/april/humphreyss-real-innovation), was a set of six pairs of long, curving "diagonal riders" running from the keel up toward the decks, which held the huge hull straight as it flexed in heavy seas. Without them, a long wooden ship tends to hog, meaning the bow and stern droop at the ends. Modern model tests found that a model with the diagonals installed could take nearly three times the load of one without them and still deflect less. That stiffness is what let Humphreys build ships longer, thinner and heavier than European frigates while keeping their speed. The scale of the gamble was considerable too. Britain had actually written off the 44-gun frigate concept by 1802 after watching French attempts fail, confident its nimbler 18-pounder frigates would win any matchup, as detailed at historynet.com/early-naval-innovation-american-44-gun-frigates. The Constitution, United States and President displaced 1,575 tons, about 23 percent heavier than the comparable British Endymion class, and the United States could throw a broadside of 888 pounds against roughly 552 from a British 74 in rough weather, when the heavier ship had to keep its lower gun ports shut. The design's lasting success also reflects the material Humphreys had to work with, since American forests supplied live oak and white oak of a quality few European shipyards could match, a story the USS Constitution Museum traces in its Forest to Frigate exhibit (ussconstitutionmuseum.org/2016/09/21/humphreys).
