  The most important "take away" for me here is the publication of a new(ish) book of the complete paintings.The Catalogue Raisonné is priced at £1,000 so this collection -a kind of  Catalogue Raisonné light at £28 on Amazon is a must buy! For those interested in more in-depth biographic details the 2022 book Revelations by Stevens&Swan is key. Anyway I enjoyed this intelligent discussion very much so thanks for that. On to part 2!

  Btw: the amount of money that wealthy art collectors can pay for paintings does not in the least determine ‘great’ art.  It simply shows the world something we all already know.  It simply shows us again that very wealthy collectors of art can pay lots of money for anything they want to own.  Good for them👍🏻🍾

  Since I took an interest in Bacon, I've been struck by the 'a' in the triptych title rather than 'the'. I am no art historian but increasingly I have come to wonder whether this triptych is not really about Christ's crucifixion, except indirectly as such a compelling and familiar symbol of death and suffering. Instead, I wonder whether it is about those 'at the base' being forced to see and experience the agonies of WWII, whether first hand or through photographic images or seeing the impact of the trauma experienced by the surviving witnesses. Maybe the main subject was always meant to be those who were forced to be such witnesses rather than the poor creature up on the cross and out of picture(s). It may be a depiction of the awful corrosive effect on those viewers of being forced to be present in the 1940s and to witness it for themselves.
