This series on Bacon, like all the podcasts so far, is tremendous.

This was one of my favourite series by far - I didn't want it to end! Also my first ever comment on a YouTube video, that's how much I enjoyed this. Thank you

Really enjoyed this series. I loved the mix of storytelling, visual analysis, and the debate towards the end! Would love a series on Lucian Freud next. Both he and Bacon pushed portraiture in very different directions.

Just finished listening to/watching all three of the Michelangelo episodes. I loved them. There is a chemistry, humanity and understanding that you two bring which makes art come alive in a wonderfully engaging and totally accessible way—I really enjoyed your work.

Now, I have to admit that I too believe Michelangelo’s work on the Sistine Chapel is the greatest work of Western European art - period.

Having said that, as I listened to you talk about Michelangelo, I was waiting for you to discuss at least two things. First, to discuss “Jonah” as a masterpiece of Renaissance perspective, with Jonah’s figure seemingly leaning backwards on a surface that is itself physically curved and leaning forwards - for me, astonishing. Second, to explain why we can see God’s bottom in “The Creation of the Plants of the Earth” - what’s going on there?

However, don’t let those absences take anything away from this great podcast, a totally fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable series. Thank you!

One detail I was surprised you didn’t mention: as I understand it, George Dyer’s body was discovered before the Grand Palais opening, and the decision was made not to report his death until after the festivities. His body remained locked in the hotel room while Bacon attended the reception. I think that adds an important—and deeply unsettling—dimension to the discussion of Bacon’s grief and guilt afterward. It certainly makes the Black Triptychs even more haunting. I’d be very interested in Alastair and James’s thoughts on that part of the story.

I’d love a Time Machine to go back and visit Bacon in his prime and watch him paint!
Time travelling back to any artist’s prime years would be incredibly interesting! ❤
