The big problem is the water source. Maybe I should get a pool.

Common sense is alive and well: also, the price of all the bits and pieces and the work involved is a drop in the bucket when you compare it to the cost of building a new home. Thanks for showing this, Zeke!

2003 wildfire that swept Harbinson Canyon near El Cajon, Ca. We did the same thing, sprinklers on the roof at the same time being on the roof with a garden hose fighting the fire as it swpt through. It damaged my lungs but we saved the property and the house. You're on your own, if...the water pressure holds out.

I’ve installed a 3/4” hose around my house under the eves that sprays pool water in a fine mist. I used a lighter and hot needle to create the mist pattern. I’ve invested only about $200 in this. Easy and simple. Took only 10 or so man hours. It will have a dedicated battery soon. If we get the call to evacuate, I will turn it on and get out of there. My insurance co and fire department are unimpressed. It would be nice to see some incentivizing for this type of thing.

Every ‘Ranch’ in California needs a swimming pool. Colorado too.

I'm firm believer in luck. The harder I work, the luckier I get. This is a great video for people to get an idea of non conventional systems

Back in the day I installed rural water systems. The cost to install a 3850 gallon tank (versus a 2000 gallon tank which was standard) was negligible. It’s only the cost of the tank itself. I was able to get a lot more storage for folks just using money logic. Lots of peace of mind from almost doubling the storage. Add a 3 1/2” valve and fire thread adapter and it’s there for fire service use when needed.

I put two 1" rainbirds on my roof hooked up to a honda gas water pump with the sump in a canal next to my house. 50' nice coverage. Told a local fire chief about my system he got all pissed off saying the public has no rite to fight their own fire. Jeez! Ill only tell other homeowners from now on.

The Boy Scout in me finds this topic immensely informative. Another helpful look into wild fire prep'ing. Many thanks and keep them coming!

We did something very similar for my in laws house up by Idyllwild, smaller property, but same principles. One thing we did as it was up in the mountains and well pressure sucked was buy every large water tote we could find, those went under a balcony and were plumbed together, off the top of my head I want to say we ended up with close to 60 330 gallon totes. We had one neighbor start to bitch about it, till we pointed out that the sprinklers on that side of the property would help protect his home as well.

We gained a lot of knowledge from watching videos about how the Aussies protect their homes, well worth watching.

Awesome video! The opening was incredibly emotional! Would have like to have seen more of it as they fought to save their home. In 2017 the Thomas Fire came roaring through here and those images are all too familiar. Great information and thank you for taking the time to document, interview the owner and share it here on your great channel. I've referred a ton of people your coverage of wildfires and will continue to do so. Well Done!

One important point to make is that for sites using a well, you need a backup generator that can ensure the pump can run to keep your supply running. And for an external pump as Mike showed, you’ll need enough fuel to meet your needs.
