The name of the American Memoir is a reference to Mark Twain’s book “ A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” I believe. Great podcast

Well.... Two thoughts....

The 'thunder run' on Meiktila was arguably one of the finest combined arms operations conducted by any allied force of significant size anywhere, any time during the war. Jack Bowsher has written two fantastic books on how the 14th Army Armour operated in Burma, Forgotten Armour, which is a general overview, and Thunder Run Meiktila 1945. They are armour focussed books but well worth a read if you want to round out the infantry heavy focus many of the current works on this fascinating theatre have.

Second thought, I will never be able to read Shakespeare in the same way again! Shakespeare with a brummie accent is unfortunately going to be lodged permanently in my mind!

I would say that Burma in a historical study tends to be viewed as a chapter, not a book. What I mean by that is that writing about the campaign is a chapter on Imphal or Kohima, then come back after the Monsoon season and talk about the next bit. The Monsoon season is glossed over. It is viewed episodically not as a continuous set of connected events. However, the campaign is somewhat akin to Marlborough's time in the early 1700s. There is a campaign season that allows for a few huge battles, savage and upclose, then a pause for the monsoon. In that time, it is about training and build up for the next major set of battles.

He would be referencing A Connecticut Yankee in King Author's Court, so as a Connecticut Yankee,I approve.

I've been in South East Asia during the monsoon, it's lovely, if no one is shooting at you, you have the use of metaled roads, somewhere comfortable to sleep, your properly fed, you can get out of the rain and sleep or eat, you are not called upon to achieve super human physical effort, access to modern medicine, etc etc. Yes Thailand Burma Vietnam Cambodia are lovely during the monsoon.

Lol. Only this podcast. Trying to describe a georaphic feature and Holland explains it by saying ..... "Think of it a sort of inverted Appenine of Italy." Lol. These guys are too smart . Luckily, there is Google.

I realize this is out of context, but I post this hoping Jim and Al read their newer comments.
Regarding Monty: Monty was a bad officer and soldier for the same reason MacArthur was; neither respected the chain of command. Rather than being support for Ike, Monty was a constant thorn in his side- even Patton didn't vex him as much, and Patton would, albeit grudgingly, respect the chain of command. An order is an order, as long as it's lawful. Monty's job wasn't to question Ike, it was to advise him and follow whatever directive Eisenhower decided on.
Full stop.
